Taste and odor

First determine where the rotten-egg odor occurs.

A sulfur-like smell may be associated with the source water, water heater, plumbing or drain. Locating it helps prevent an irrelevant treatment purchase.

Odor alone does not establish that water is safe or unsafe. Treat it as an observation that helps select appropriate inspection and testing.

A simple location check

  • Compare cold and hot water at several fixtures.
  • Collect water in a clean glass and move away from the sink before smelling it; a drain odor can be misleading.
  • Note whether the odor is strongest after water has sat unused.
  • Record whether it appeared after water-heater work, well work or disinfection.

Why hot-water-only odor matters

If only hot water is affected, the water heater and its operating conditions deserve attention. That does not prove the exact cause, and water-heater service can involve scalding, pressure, electricity or gas hazards. Use a qualified professional where appropriate.

When both hot and cold water smell

A source-water or well-system investigation becomes more relevant when the odor occurs throughout the cold-water system. Discuss the observation with a certified laboratory and experienced well professional. Ask about proper handling because some odor-related compounds can dissipate quickly.

Do not mask the problem

A cartridge or chemical that temporarily changes odor is not necessarily addressing its source. Treatment selection may depend on concentration, flow, pH, iron, manganese and microbiological conditions.

Safety note: A sewage-like, fuel-like or chemical odor should not be casually labeled “sulfur.” Stop drinking the water and contact the appropriate health or environmental authority if contamination is suspected.
